It was sad to see the news of film icon, Val Kilmer's passing last night at the age of 65! The reports from his daughter, say he had pneumonia at the time of his death, but the guy had been diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014 but he later recovered!
My introduction to Val Kilmer was Ron Howard's fantasy film, "Willow"! I didn't think much of him. I enjoyed the film and I had all the "Willow" merch but I didn't like film because of Kilmer! The next film I can remember seeing was "Tombstone"! THAT was the film that made me pay closer attention to Kilmer. Like many who've seen the film, he was the standout in a superb cast. The film was decent, but I thought Kilmer's charismatic performance as the boozy and eccentric Doc Holliday was magnificent and made the entertaining yet cliche and predictable film above average! I would later discover his unforgettable performances as Jim Morrison (even doing his own singing) in "The Doors", a funny private detective in "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", and of course as Chris, the expert thief in "Heat"!
His final performance was revisiting his "Iceman" character in "Top Gun: Maverick"! No one could ask a better send-off for a character or actor. He was truly a unique and one-of-a-kind actor. He will be missed! Thankfully he lives on through his cinematic legacy!
R.I.P. Val Kilmer!
